Through filming in China, Britain, France, Germany, USA and other countries, the documentary The Dimension of Civilization presents an ignored history of the communication between the East and the West in the 18th and 19th centuries in terms of the British scholar Kompert. Such communication starts from the form of painting painted by Chinese people in which people can clearly see the transformation from "China's world" to "world of China". Through the stories of those nameless painters who existed nearly a century before Liu Haisu and Lin Fengmian, we can see the dynamics between the East and the West. This communication took place on the eve of the invention of photography, on the eve of the firing in 1840, and the eve of great change in the world.
