Introduction:

PRATOPIA is set in Prato, Tuscany, Europe's largest textile hub and home to a significant Chinese community. Since the 1980s, migrants from Wenzhou, China, have filled factory vacancies and eventually become entrepreneurs, creating the Pronto Moda system that reshaped European fast fashion. Today, as younger Chinese generations move away from factories, South Asian migrants increasingly occupy the workshops.

The film explores this transition through three protagonists. Aoke, a 1.5-generation Chinese immigrant, grew from a child laborer in garment factories into an accountant advising Chinese entrepreneurs. Having achieved economic mobility, he now searches for fulfillment through music. Ghulam, a Pakistani factory owner, dreams of launching his own fashion brand. Laura, born into a communist family of Prato textile workers, supplies "Made in Italy" labels to Chinese fashion brands while remaining involved in the migrant workers'struggle.

Their lives rarely intersect directly, yet they are connected by the same system. Prato itself functions as the film's fourth protagonist. The film asks whether the recurring cycle of labor, upward mobility and replacement can be broken, and whether solidarity can emerge between communities whose histories mirror one another. Through Prato, PRATOPIA reflects on a world caught between an old order and a new one yet to emerge.
