Located in Punta Arenas, a pioneer village at the most southerly point of Chilean Tierra del Fuego, this cinema was built in 1902, by two adventurers; one Croat, the other German. They were jobless and that is how they thought: why not open a movie house?
As they were short of films, they decided to make some: fictions and documentaries. In particular, they filmed the daily lives, rituals and festivities of the indigenous people, the legendary Alakalufs, who lived naked on the ice. Without knowing it, they were the world’s first ethnological filmmakers, recording civilisations that no longer exist.
