In 1904, the Zionist Congress sent an expedition to the Ugandan highlands to explore their potential as a Jewish homeland. Supported discreetly by the British Colonial Administration, which described East Africa as "vacant" and "barren" and a blank imperial canvas, one surveyor began mapping soil, climate, and life in Uganda, which Zionist circles had already started calling a "New Promised Land." What occurred on that mountain that led Wilbush to vow never to return remains unknown. Based on footage from a contemporary location scout and on the email exchange with the location manager in Uganda, THE RECCE examines the intertwined logics of filmmaking and empire—each creating fictions and projecting them onto the land. THE RECCE is a reflection on cinema itself, its relationship to land, and its entanglement with colonial ambitions.
