SQUARE HORIZONS– A HOUSE ACROSS BORDERS is CHEN Jianhang's debut feature documentary, following Yongjian, a Teochew man born in Vietnam who is now approaching ninety. At the age of ten, he was forced by war to return to his ancestral homeland in Chaoshan, where he has spent the decades since in Chenghai.Living in the ancestral house left by his grandfather, Yongjian follows the rhythms of daily life. After retiring as a laboratory administrator, he continues to explain the world around him through elements, molecules, atomsand electrons, beneath the house's open courtyard. In old age, he experiences another form of displacement: his children have moved away, friends have passed on, and he feels increasingly estranged from the place he calls home. Yet he remains deeply attached to memories of his carefree childhood in Vietnam's fertile Mekong Delta. Over seven years, we have documented Yongjian's recurring recollections and declining health, travelling between Chenghai and Cần Thơ, Vietnam, in search of the streets, houses and traces of history preserved in his memory. The film weaves together his experience of displacement, his memories of Vietnam and his scientific worldview. Through film stock and sound, we blur the boundaries between reality, memory and fiction, creating a dreamscape of Vietnam as it lives on in Yongjian's imagination.
